• Discuss the biology and pathophysiology of diabetic foot disease, including neurogenic and vascular changes
• Describe the risk classifications for foot pathology including the definitions and examples of low, increased, and high risk feet
• The effects of vascular disease and neuropathic changes including autonomic, motor and sensory neuropathic pathologies and their role in increasing foot risk
• The medical evaluation of the patients, including comorbidity control, nutritional deficiencies, polypharmacy, and social risk factors
• Subjective and objective signs of arterial disease, including reported history and physical examination with noninvasive vascular testing
• Dermatology evaluation including palpation, inspection and testing. Specific derm changes on visual inspection and their importance and implications in the high risk foot
• Toenail deformities in the high risk foot and treatment options, including the risks of the deformities themselves as well as the treatment options for the high risk patient
• Basic interventions including treatment of heel fissures, macerated inner spaces, bony deformities
General risk management and patient education for the high risk patient

Course Objectives

• Discuss risk classifications as well as exam findings and evaluations in each category
• Describe how vascular disease and peripheral neuropathy play a role in creating increased risk assessment
• Describe subjective and objective findings as well as diagnostic testing for arterial, venous and neuropathic abnormalities
• Recognize and identify changes to the skin which can create a high risk situation
• Describe the procedures for avulsions and matrixectomies, their indications and contraindications
• Discuss important patient education issues which can empower patients to prevent and have early recognition of problems which are common with high risk feet
