Monsel's Topical Hemostatic Solution

Rainier Medical Education has everything you need to care for your patients, including topical hemostatics. Monsel's solution is an aqueous hemostatic agent that contains ferric subsulfate and an astringent. It’s used to stop bleeding around minor cuts and biopsies. When used for foot care, this solution is an ideal way to stop bleeding during nail and callus debridement.

This hemostatic solution is caustic. For more information, download the MSDS on this page. Since this is not a single-use bottle, care must be taken to prevent cross contamination. The bottle includes a dropper, or a clean cotton swab can be used for application. It should not be poured onto gauze, as there’s a chance the fabric may touch the rim of the bottle. Each bottle contains 2 ounces of solution and includes a dropper.

Recommended Use in Routine Foot Care:

Since this is not a single use bottle, infection control is critical.
One method of achieving this is to use a cotton swab or Q-Tip, soak well in the bottle. Then apply the swab to the area of bleeding. Do not push hard or scrub the area with the swab. Simply use the swab to get the solution on to the wounded area. It is ok to touch the skin with the swab or gently roll it over the area. But do not rub it on with force.

It may take several swabs to apply enough solution to achieve hemostasis.

Another method would be to pour a small amount of solution into a second container such as a small paper cup. This then becomes the one patient portion.

We do not recommend that you pour the solution directly onto a piece of gauze. There is too much chance of the gauze touching the rim of the bottle opening and contaminate.
